Pour Your Heart into It |
 |
Since 1987, Starbucks's star has
been on the rise, growing from 11 Seattle, WA-based stores to more than
1,000 worldwide. Its goals grew, too, from the more modest, albeit fundamental
one of offering high-quality coffee beans roasted to perfection to, more
recently, opening a new store somewhere every day. An exemplary success
story, Starbucks is identified with innovative marketing strategies, employee-ownership
programs, and a product that's become a subculture.
Whether you're an entrepreneur, a manager, a marketer, or a curious Starbucks
loyalist, Pour Your Heart into It will let you in on the revolutionary
Starbucks venture. CEO Howard Schultz recounts the company's rise in 24
chapters, each of which illustrates such core values as "Winning
at the expense of employees is not victory at all."

Uncommon Grounds |
 |
Since its discovery in an Ethiopian
rainforest centuries ago, coffee has brewed up a rich and troubled history,
according to Uncommon Grounds, a sweeping book by business writer Mark
Pendergrast. Over the years, the beverage has fomented revolution, spurred
deforestation, enriched a few while impoverishing the many, and addicted
millions with its psychoactive caffeine. Coffee is now the world's second
most valuable legal commodity, behind oil, according to Pendergrast, who
is also author of For God, Country, and Coca-Cola.
"A good cup of coffee can turn the worst day tolerable, can provide
an all-important moment of contemplation, can rekindle a romance,"
he writes. "And yet, poetic as its taste may be, coffee's history
is rife with controversy and politics." For example, coffee bankrolled
Idi Amin's genocidal regime in Uganda and the Sandinistas' revolution
in Nicaragua. Uncommon Grounds provides some fascinating tidbits. Did
you know that coffeehouses helped spawn the French and American revolutions?
Or that coffee supplanted alcohol as a favorite breakfast drink in Britain
in the late 1600s, and later became a patriotic American beverage after
the Boston Tea Party? Pendergrast also details the rise and fall of regional
coffee brands in the United States, the role of advertising in the industry,
the global economic impact of coffee prices, and the recent emergence
of specialty-coffee retailers--Starbucks, for example. Finally, he explores
the social and environmental ramifications of coffee and highlights recent
attempts to encourage a livable wage and environmental protection in coffee-producing
nations such as Brazil. Pendergrast also includes an appendix on "how
to brew the perfect cup." This wide-ranging book is a good read for
those curious about the history and context behind that morning cup of
coffee, as well as for those strictly interested in the business side
of the industry. |

Perfect Cup: A Coffee Lover's Guide to
Buying, Brewing and Tasting |
 |
Coffee expert Timothy Castle chronicles
the coffee revolution in America and offers information on everything
from the bean itself to brewing and appreciating the perfect cup. Do different
brewing methods produce different-tasting coffees? What is the most common
mistake people make at home with coffee? Is there reason to be concerned
about chemical decaffeinating processes? These and many other questions
are answered in this book. In a section entitled "How to Buy Coffee
and Whom to Buy It From", Castle includes interviews with more than
30 of America's foremost coffee retailers and roasters. He also provides
an overview of the regions of the world where coffee is commonly grown,
and offers more than two dozen unusual recipes featuring coffee in sauces,
marinades, main courses, and desserts, such as "Grilled Coffee-Marinated
Lamb Chops", "Cappuccino Muffins", and "Chocolate

Home Coffee Roasting: Romance and Revival
|
 |
This nation's obsession with coffee
continues to evolve. Coffee addicts who have already traded up to the
latest bean grinders and brewing machines now have a new frontier to conquer:
roasting their own beans. Davids' updated edition of his earlier work
addresses the technological advances that have made home roasting even
more accessible. After surveying the history of coffee roasting and the
machinery invented for that purpose, Davids scrutinizes the world's coffees,
comparing their varietal characteristics so that home roasters can anticipate
which beans will produce coffees that best suit their tastes. His quick
guide to home roasting methods clearly delineates the advantages and disadvantages
of each alternative, from the most expensive home roasting machines to
simple stove-top and microwave oven techniques. Beginning home roasters
may be surprised to find that one of the simplest coffee-roasting machines
is a hot-air popcorn popper. Davids' clearly written instructions make
home coffee roasting sound easy and should extend the process to a broad
audience. |

Cappuccino/Espresso: The Book of Beverages
(Nitty Gritty Cookbooks) |
 |
A good ref. book for the kitchen
of someone w/ experience., September 20, 1998
Reviewer: A reader from Turkey
The size is perfect for a quick kitchen reference book. The format is
user friendly and has a certain charm. It is not the best guide for begining
cappuccino makers as the directives are vague regarding how to make the
perfect cup of expresso. As the book points out itself, in order to get
a perfect cappuccino, you must first brew a perfect expresso. Overall,
I enjoyed the recipes and like the fact that cold drinks were included
for the warmer months. The price makes it an easy addition to any kitchen
that has an expresso machine. |
