The Hamptons Diet

The Atkins diet meets The South Beach Diet . . . dieting secrets of the rich, famous—and thin!
Atkins results. Hamptons style. As the former medical director of the Atkins Center and a frequent guest on radio and television, Dr. Fred Pescatore is one of today's most highly visible low-carb diet doctors. And his visibility is sure to increase now that he is taking over the customer base of the Atkins Center, following Dr. Atkins's untimely death in early 2003. Building on the low-carb, Mediterranean-style diet plan he pioneered in Thin For Good, Dr. Pescatore now presents The Hamptons Diet, a program that introduces a secret ingredient—macadamia nut oil, the most monounsaturated oil on the planet—among other delicious components. Complete with 30-day meal plans featuring more than 100 mouthwatering recipes from celebrity chefs and just in time for the summer beach season, The Hamptons Diet is 2004's exciting new low-carb diet book—a deliciously satisfying, medically sound weight-loss program that can help anyone slim down and feel like the rich, famous, and thin.

The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet

If you've been a yo-yo dieter for years or if you can eat a pound of pasta at one sitting, this book may very well be an eye opener. In simple--but never condescending--language, it explains the roots of carbohydrate cravings and teaches you how to normalize your insulin levels to prevent future food binges. Regulated insulin levels in turn help to temper serotonin levels, so food cravings and mood swings are prevented. The authors, both research scientists (one a health psychologist, the other a pathologist), have lost and kept off a total of 200 pounds between them. They've based this book on nearly a decade's worth of research, during which they've helped nearly 80 percent of their patients lose weight and keep it off for at least a year.
They explain that carbohydrate addicts most commonly crave popcorn, breads, bagels, rice, pasta, potatoes, ice cream, chocolate, pie, cookies, crackers, cake, fruit and fruit juice, potato chips, and pretzels. A questionnaire at the beginning of the book determines if you're indeed a carbohydrate addict, and if so, to what extent. (For those readers whose quiz doesn't indicate addiction, but who are bothered by their food cravings, the authors recommend a doctor's visit for an explanation.) The book includes a diet plan with dozens of easy recipes, a chart of the carbohydrate content of many common foods, and lists of binge triggers to watch for. The most appealing part of the diet--and one reason that it wins raves from its followers--is its once-a-day reward meal, which allows you to eat anything you want. The authors also offer helpful tips for incorporating the diet away from home, such as at parties and restaurants.

The Paleo Diet

According to author Loren Cordain, modern health and diet problems didn't start with the advent of packaged snack food, but much earlier--back at the dawn of the agricultural age many thousands of years ago. As humans became less nomadic and more dependent on high-carbohydrate diets, we left behind the diet we had evolved with, which is based on low-fat proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Sugars, fats, and carbs were rare, if they were present at all, and survival required a steady, if low-key, level of activity.
Cordain's book The Paleo Diet blends medical research with a healthy sprinkle of individual anecdotes, practical tips, and recipes designed to make his suggestions into a sustainable lifestyle, rather than a simple month-long diet; he even includes cooking recommendations and nationwide sources for wild game.

Claims of improving diseases from diabetes to acne to polycystic ovary disease may be a little overstated, but in general the advice seems sound. Can any of us really go wrong by adding lots more vegetables and fruits to our daily regimen? One recommendation on safe tanning with a gradual reduction in sunscreen is surprising and not much detail is provided for safety issues that can accompany increased sun exposure. Still, Cordain's assertions have helped many people, and could provide exactly the changes you've been looking for to improve your health.

Living Low-Carb

As many enthusiasts have discovered, it's easy to lose weight on the low-carb diet. But keeping the weight off requires an ongoing commitment--not an easy feat when faced with dieting drudgery, dinners out, holiday gatherings, and demoralizing eating binges. While many low-carb diet books offer the initial thrill of weight loss, this book is a lifelong manual, offering tips and guidance to keep readers committed for the long haul.
Author Fran McCullough starts with "secret weapons" (such as blocking sugars, cleansing the liver, and keeping a food diary), must-haves in any long-term dieter's arsenal. She also offers a valuable "Troubleshooting" section that covers commons challenges, such as dinner invitations ("Come on over for Dinner") and binge eating ("Blowing It"). She addresses the persistent snacking problem with a list of low-carb delights (including shrimp with guacamole or prosciutto and melon). She even lists alternative foods for the times when you crave disaster foods. (For example, a craving for pizza can be satisfied with grilled eggplant, mozzarella cheese, and oregano.) The second half of the book is devoted to McCullough's specialty--tasty and satisfying low-carb recipes, such as Buffalo Boys Chili and Berry and Mango Compote.

Dieting for Dummies

"The key to successful weight loss doesn't require magic, grit and determination, or the moral character of a saint. It's much simpler," asserts Jane Kirby, R.D., in Dieting for Dummies, a fact-filled, fad-free dieting resource. The author represents the American Dietetic Association, a trustworthy source of scientifically sound nutrition and food information. You'll learn basic, reliable facts about all facets of weight loss, including helpful information about eating disorders, overweight children, dietary guidelines, fat replacers, calorie-shaving substitutions, a comparison of weight-loss programs, and an exposé of diet fads and scams (including some bestselling diet books). The book is organized into sections on your healthy weight; developing a healthy relationship with food; a plan for healthful living (including exercise); shopping, cooking, and dining out; and enlisting outside help. An excellent chapter on eating out spells out exactly what you should and shouldn't eat at restaurants of different kinds. As you'd expect from a For Dummies book, the writing is lively, friendly, and down-to-earth. The content is reliable and organized into accessible, easily skimmed chunks, with plenty of bulleted lists and charts making the information easy to grasp. If you've been confused by controversial diets or seduced by weight-loss fads-of-the-moment, read this book cover to cover.

The 30-Day Low-Carb Diet Solution

Low-carb eating helps you look and feel great!
All it takes is thirty days . . .

Cheryl’s story:

Cheryl is 5'4" tall. She weighed 309 pounds. After she went on the Eades’ diet plan, she lost a substantial amount of weight in just 30 days. The plan works long-term, too: after a year, Cheryl weighed just 135 pounds and she met her first boyfriend. She’s never felt or looked better, and she loves the delicious range of satisfying foods she eats.

Mitch’s story:

Mitch is a doctor. He went on a very low-fat, near-vegetarian diet after a heart attack, but the low-fat diet lowered his good cholesterol and raised his triglycerides to the point where his doctor discussed putting Mitch on medication to adjust his blood levels. Mitch went on the Eades’ diet plan and, within 30 days, he lost weight, his triglycerides plummeted, and his good cholesterol went up. He feels great.

Isn’t it time for you to find The 30-Day Low-Carb Diet Solution?
